Robotic assistant Moxi will help nurses at ChristinaCare to deliver supplies efficiently to the patient room. The aim of using the collaborative robot EHR Software integration or ‘cobot’ is to alleviate nurse burnout.

How can the collaborative robot help nursing staff?

The cobot can work with the nursing staff and even interact with them. They can handle nonclinical responsibilities such as deliveries and pickups so nurses can focus on patient care. ChristinaCare has bought 5 of these collaborative robots and they can work 22-hour shifts and can be fully charged in two hours. ChristinaCare has received a 1.5 million grant from the American Nurses Foundation.

The cobot EHR integration is especially useful as a national nursing shortage is expected which can get worse with time. The cobot technology can allow nurses to get the time to offer high-quality care as lower-level tasks will be automated. Studies have shown that it takes 33 percent of the nurse’s time to find and gather the right supplies required for patient care. By anticipating nurses’ needs the issue of burnout can be addressed which can even lead to positive health outcome levels.

Cobot integration with the Electronic Health Records Software

The grant will allow the hospital to use more than three robots and integrate the with ChristinaCare’s Cerner Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Software solution to save the time of nurses so they can work efficiently. Moxi will not replace the nursing staff but will augment their workflows to achieve better performance levels.

The nursing staff at the hospital is satisfied with the robotic assistant as it saves them time and allows them to care for their patients.  The robot will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to identify when the nurse needs medicine or equipment. Some of the tasks which the cobot can perform include, bringing supplies to patients, making rounds to deliver lab samples, and reducing the overall working load.

Robotics in healthcare

The cobots are even friendly to the patients as they can wave to people and even pose for selfies. The nurses at the hospital feel that they are helpful to handle tasks that can otherwise consume a lot of time and lead to increased stress levels and eventually burnout. The patients also have positive reviews about the robotic assistant and find them amazing. The innovative strategy is set to drive nursing outcomes through robotics technology.
